Well finally, 21 years after a simple strep infection triggered Sammy’s two year battle with mental illness, could it be that the medical community is finally catching on?

“It is not entirely clear what prompts the body to misdirect its immune response against neurons, but one possibility is that a mild, otherwise harmless, infection can kick off an immune response that goes awry.”

I wrote in Saving Sammy that it takes 20 years for most significant changes in medicine to happen.  So, I guess this is right on schedule.  But the hell that has been inflicted on so many families by so many doctors in the meantime is inexcusable.  Children committing suicide.  Children ripped from their homes by child protection services blindly following the direction of know-nothing child abuse pediatricians.  Parents facing criminal charges of medical child abuse.  Yes, I’m glad to read this but I can’t help wondering what took so long?  I do, however, appreciate the courage and strength of Prof. Belinda Lennox of the University of Oxford for pressing this forward.  I’m sure she will be verbally attacked by her colleagues.
