Crystal Bryant, the mom in this Colorado case, reached out to me after coming across my new book. She said that my writing touched every aspect of her case, including that these parents ended up in jail facing criminal charges for felony child abuse. The child had a bone disorder. Who accused? A child abuse pediatrician did. Who figured out what was really wrong? The parents did. Almost two out of every five children in the US are the subjects of a child protection investigation. Crystal was “fortunate” that the ordeal only last five months. They got their child back, and the charges were dropped. Often the outcome is very different. The jump to abuse charges, rather than a careful consideration of whether there may be medical issues, is a travesty. It needs to change.
